Did you know that your analog video and audio tapes are at risk?

Even under ideal storage conditions analog media (magnetic tape) degrades over time. In most cases, however, we do not store analog audio/video tapes in an ideal environment, so the degradation is escalated.

There are many ways a magnetic tape can degrade and become unplayable, including polymer binder degradation (resulting in "sticky tape"), lubricant loss, magnetic particle instabilities, substrate deformation and erasure due to exposure to a magnetic source (i.e. stereo speaker).

One solution is to back up your tapes to new tapes every few years. Unfortunately, with analog recording, there will be a loss in quality when copying a tape within the analog domain. If your original tape is too degraded to make a new copy from and you are forced to use a copy of the original to make a new backup copy the quality loss is even worse.

Although digital media does have some drawbacks (i.e. breakage) it is by far a superior format for backing up your tapes. Once you have made a digital copy of an analog tape it is very easy to make multiple copies to ensure the integrity of your audio/video library. After the initial transfer, which has to be in "real-time" your digital copies can be duplicated in "non real-time", which is a much faster process. When duplicating analog to analog you always have to contend with duplicating in "real-time".

Harnett Media can assist you in preserving your precious memories and/or business data. We can perform an affordable transfer, without any edits or region definitions or we can create a more complex DVD with chapters and menus. Either way, you will enjoy peace of mind knowing that your analog tapes have been backed up. The bonus is that you will have your audio and video in a format that you will more likely want to play (CD, DVD). There are many solutions available where anyone can do such transfers, if they have the time and are comfortable with technology. However, if you are someone that does not have the time or desire to perform such tasks, give us a call and we will be happy to do the work for you.

There are a number of resources on the internet regarding tape degradation. If you don't mind a fairly technical read, one such site is http://www.clir.org/PUBS/reports/pub54/2what_wrong.html
